Guruji’s Message

Take shelter in the realm of God. It’s all blissful here.
We take birth as different creatures in this world according to our deeds only. These deeds have been distributed into three different categories: Sacred deeds, Kingly deeds, and mean acts. These three types of instincts are related to the deeds mentioned above. This simply means that our death and birth depend on the traits of our body. Therefore, a devotee should not entangle himself in the net of the nature of deeds and should devote himself to God for he is a small part of God only. “God never does anything wrong to his men. Therefore, the man keeps him attached to God, there only lies his welfare.”
We are soul only, and there is hidden the secret of his well-being. We are souls and the relation between soul and God is everlasting. The relationship is such that there is nothing beyond that. Whatever we are having with us, everything is for the sake of God. If we think in this way, there will not be any difficulty in attaining salvation.
“God and soul are eternal, Consciousness is pure and naturally blissful.”
“Ishwar ans jeev abinas, Chetan amal sahaj sukh rasi”
He bestows his blessings at every moment. He says that whosoever has taken birth on this earth, is very much a part of my own self. But man makes this mistake time and again by creating relationships with materialistic and worldly things and thus, forgets the main issue. Even after so many mistakes we commit again and again, he keeps smiling and tries to bring us on the right path by several means. He keeps telling us that this is not your way. Our work is to serve and devote. But what does man do? He dives deep into worldly pleasures and tries to get all materialistic happiness, sensing pleasures in these things. Man fails to understand the difference between the path and the goal or destination, makes this mistake time and again, and blames his God for this. He does not accept it as his own mistake.
Man is paying attention to dead things [matter] and forgetting the alive [conscious]. Man’s greed finds no end. Even if you give him the reign of the entire universe, he will not be satisfied. Man tries to evade that almighty who can fulfill all his desires in no time. But he wants to achieve all the prosperities by other means. That’s why God has said, forget about every other thing. No conceits or wits are going to help. You come to my Shelter. You recite my name. This will bring every happiness in your life. This is the easiest way of getting all prosperities. But he is madly running after other devices. God is not a materialistic thing that you are trying to get Him by different devices. No device is going to work in this respect. Then what is going to help? Your devotion and your chanting will immediately work. You take His name and have Trust in him. So He is the only savior, father, and well-doer of you. He is gracious and the ultimate God.
If we come out of the illusion, the same world looks different and looks heavenly. The entire fault lies in the sensory pleasures. For the sake of aspiring to these pleasures, man forgets the difference between good and bad, fair and unfair, and does everything to get them at any cost. Otherwise, it is not at all needed. This human life has been given to us for the very sacred deeds. And this sacred work is to protect humanity, to establish it, to have mercy on all other creatures on the earth, and work in the service of God. All other works are meant for our bodies only. But we have forgotten the basic thing and look after the needs of our worldly life. O gentleman! If you keep looking at your dress and do not eat anything, is it going to help you? It is not wisdom. This physique is just like our dress only. We do not know after changing how many dresses [forms], we have come to this final beautiful [human] dress. We should make good use of it. And it can be made by doing something for our soul also. If we do not put any food into the stomach of our soul, it means we are worrying only about the body and this is the sole and main reason for all our sorrows.
One thing is certain that what is ours, does not belong to us. To think it your own is the root cause of all the sorrow. Think, when we get apart, how painful it is. If you know that it is going to happen that if you think it yours it is going to cause pain, then why do you put yourself in trouble? Think that this body is His, we [soul] are His and the entire grandeur is His and we are here to work for Him. To only eat, drink, and earn is not the main thing. The basic thing is to work for God, to work for mankind.
“We are souls and not bodies” God, who has sent us on this earth is the king of all the three worlds. That ecstatic remains unseen at all times. He is our Godfather. The giver of human life to us is very benevolent. But after forgetting about such a kind and merciful God when we start thinking and worrying about the body and the conceits related to it, then only the faults start infesting in our body. We become proud of our body. We take it for our own body, though it is given by God to us. We start thinking this dress [human body] of our own though it belongs to God. And start doing everything for it and deviate from the right path and forget the main objective of the body which is given to us by God. At that time, our human life starts running on the way of destruction.
God has made us from two things. One is body [matter] and the other is soul [consciousness]. In Gita Lord Krishna has called it mortal and immortal. Mortal, that whose ruin is certain. And immortal means what that is not going to perish and it is conscious. Body, that is, matter and its ruin is certain. There is a time limit for its existence. And it will have to be changed at some time. Just like we change our dresses. We put off our old dress and put on a new one. Therefore, why love it? This body has been given to us to do our worldly duties, to do good to others. Its use is to perform our duties by doing good and only good to others.
The second thing which we are given is consciousness. That is a part of God only. And it is Truth + Mind + Happiness. A state of Ecstasy. We are only parts of that. It has also been stated like this:
“Iswar ans jeev abinas.”
“God and soul are eternal.”
We are a part of that imperishable Supreme God only. We have got His face only. Then we should do all those worthwhile deeds, which He wants us to do. And all this should be dedicated to Him. Try to understand one thing very clearly that this body does not belong to us and if you love it, you cannot see its divine face, that of the soul which is consciousness. And you cannot have that. But if you exert your efforts to attain the Supreme soul1, and take deep interest in that, then you will achieve complete happiness out of the body also. If you wander here and there aimlessly, it will bring restlessness in your mind. And it is certain that if you direct your consciousness towards God, you will get complete peace of mind. This is absolutely true.
We are soul, conscious and the form of God only and ultimately we are to merge with him. If you keep this thing in your mind and you perform your duties according to this philosophy only with heart and soul then it is certain that His divine form will be made visible to you. I am in the form of consciousness and this body does not belong to me. The moment you start thinking that this body is not mine, your form of consciousness starts emerging. Your state will be like a layer of cream on mattha. The body [mattha] and the creamy layer [consciousness] will look clearly apart from each other. Thus, the aim of achieving cream will become evident and the real nature of the body [mattha] will also be clearly apparent. We will immediately come to know – what is the cost of mattha and what is the cost of the cream.
Lord Krishna has clearly mentioned in his message in Gita that whosoever takes birth is going to die one day. What grows up and gets old, is your body, and not you. When you are not a body, then why weep for it because it does not belong to you at all. And why be happy to have got it. We should be happy to know that we have been given this human life to do good deeds in the world and to serve mankind to our level best, to work for mankind. We should try to establish the reign of God in the feelings of the people, and establish the reign of goodness, and to destroy all the evils from this world. Day and night, morning and evening, all this has two meanings. The same way man and devil are two different figures. Keep this in mind that he who does good to mankind is a man and is loved by God, and he who does harm to mankind is a devil; and God cannot bear his presence. But why he be called a devil, due to his transgression only. God has not made him a devil, but he got this form due to his sins and crimes.
Who was Ravana? He took birth in a Brahman family of high values; he was a great scholar and a very powerful king. But what did he do? He tortured others, harmed his people, killed poor people, and was very egotistical. He was so much indulged in all types of evils that he even lost his control over his great powers and great erudition. He forgot the main aim of his sacred life and by adopting evil powers and was ultimately killed. He saw his brothers, sons, relatives, etc. dying in front of him and at last lost his own life.
On the other hand, his own real brother Vibhishan, who adopted the path of humanity, took the help of God’s name. He worked for God and worked as a man and not as a devil, and then God gave him everything: powers and prosperity. This is an example of being human. He did not work for his mortal body. But worked for God and worked with devotion and truthfulness. Lord Krishna is clearly saying about our soul:
“Weapons do not cut it, fire does not burn it, water does not wet it, and wind does not dry it.”
“Nainam chhindanti shastrani nainam dahati pavakah na chainam kledayantyapo na shosayati marutah.”
[Gita Chapter 2/ Verse 23]
When we are a soul, then why do we relate ourselves with the body which is only a matter and also is short-lived? Our body is mortal. It can be cut by weapons and can be destroyed. Then why should we work for it? Why bother ourselves? And why bother God also? God says that soul never comes to life, nor grows young, nor gets old. Its shape never changes. Whereas the body takes birth, it grows, and it also gets old. It is targeted and surrounded by several diseases. Then which one is better – the sick body or an immortal soul? The soul is not affected by the development or destruction of the body. Your sickness cannot have any effect on your soul. When it is better than the body by all means, then why should we give more importance to the body? Man is required to accept the soul as the main thing, and devote all his good deeds to the service of God. He is supposed to live by chanting His name every moment and spend his time in his devotion.
Keep this thing in mind, that only our body dies and only this is set to fire. We neither die nor are we burnt. We keep taking birth as different creatures, and put all efforts for the sake of salvation. Our body does not do anything. It does not do any work. It doesn’t take birth; nor does it die. It is like a dress, which we keep changing. God has called the soul:
“Present everywhere” or “Omnipresent.”
“Sarvgatah”
[Gita 2/24]
meaning reaching everywhere? It is omnipresent. Therefore, on one side there is a body, which is mortal and short-lived and on the other side there is a soul which neither takes birth nor dies. The soul is everlasting, ever-youthful and indestructible, and is the part of God. Both the two are separate forms of separate natures of the creation of God. Our body is formed of five materialistic things and gets birth from the womb of our mother. This gets birth on the earth, grows up here, and ultimately becomes part of the earth after its death. All the five parts get separated from each other. Water, soil, fire, air, and space jointly made this body. After the expiry of the Agreement[!], they get apart and leave the body alone and ignored. But this is not the case with our soul. The soul is a part of God. It adopted a body, played its role, and ultimately reached its original place and is united with the Supreme Power. This is the difference between the two.
But man relates himself to the body and not to the soul. Some spiritual/religious people, having a pious nature also relate themselves with the body, and through that try to see God. But who will do it? Only he will do it who has no religious guide, who has no mentor. This should be very well understood that no doubt after seeing an idol, you get inspiration. But feeling is first and the role of an idol comes later. When no feeling is there, then it does not matter how beautiful the idol is and it will not attract the devotees. No dedication will be shown by the man. But if there is feeling, you can see God even in a rock-stone. Which is only a stone in its real sense, but when feeling looks at it with dedication and devotion, he can have a glimpse of God in that. Therefore, we should look at the soul first, and not the body. We should not tend toward the body also because it is a mine or a dwelling place of sorrows. This place is meant for sorrows only. After having tolerated and endured so many troubles and pains this body ultimately gets destroyed.
God, though willing, cannot save it even. Because when it is bound to destroy one day, why worry about it? The soul gets salvation singing in the praise of God, and takes the shelter in his sacred Supreme self. Just because the soul resurrects, takes birth again and again, therefore the soul passes through different lives suffering for his good and bad deeds and also for his sins and virtues. Good result for good deeds, bad results for bad deeds. We should accept it as truth. But people think that the body has performed all the good and bad deeds therefore this is destroyed with the body. But this is not the case. Our body is only a means of performing our duties. The same way an owner of a company gets his work done by his hundreds of employees and the people say see, the owner of that company is so much progress. Whichever the deeds, they don’t leave us for lives. The result of all the sins and virtues has to be tolerated by the soul itself. Therefore, whosoever is doing duties, and whosoever is facing results, that is we only, and not the body. The body keeps wandering in this world, but we don’t wander in the body, rather we wander with the body.
The soul is stuck to the body: As long as it’s alive, the soul remains in it. And after the death of the body, our soul leaves the body and goes in search of another body to live in. Both body and soul live together but for a certain period of time. The meeting of these two is only for a small period. The soul does not need a body at all! It can survive without a body also. Those who are called, Seers, ghosts, lords, etc. These names are given to them for their good or bad deeds only. The soul adopted numberless bodies, it adopted countless shapes, but it has not corroded a bit. Nothing bad has happened to it. Only the bodies were destroyed.
“In this body resides the supreme person.”
“dehe’sminpurusah parah”
[Gita 13/22]
While living with the body we remain cut off from it. We do not get one with it. We do perform the deeds. Our body is a type of means only. Even then we have a sort of love with it. After having slept for long or after being in ignorance for long, when we wake up, we say Oh, I slept for a long time. Whereas while sleeping we did not even know where I am, and who I am? At that time the body was like a dead, there was no consciousness in it. Therefore, there was no sensuous attraction, love, or anything. Neither was there any other sensual attraction. Then what it was, when we were sleeping. That was soul only. The body can aspire for or not for sensual pleasures. But it is beyond its control to separate the soul from it, therefore, even if when it is sleeping, its soul keeps waking.
Body and soul are just like darkness and light. They very much depend on each other for their existence. But we should desire light and light only. The moment light comes the darkness immediately runs away, both cannot stay together at all, the same way the body is a requirement for the soul but both cannot become one. The simple reason for this is that the soul is a part of great God who is conscious and the body is made of five materialistic objects. Which is going to end here only. The body does not have its own any certain goal. It is only a means. Whereas the soul has got an aim. It is to establish the things in this world mentioned by God. It has to play all the roles which are assigned to it. Singing in praise of God, and doing good deeds and through this to get to its ultimate goal that is God. This is not within the limits of the body. The body is meant for obeying the orders of the soul only.
When Arjun asked Lord Krishna how to attain salvation then Lord Krishna said First of all you forget that you are a body. You are not a body. This is lifeless. As far as you think that you are a body, I cannot do any good to your mind at any cost. The moment a man takes birth, the process of his death also starts taking place. At first, he becomes a child, thereafter he becomes a youth, and after that, he goes old. The conditions of his body keep changing continuously. His body keeps dying every moment, but his soul never dies. It remains the same. It always remains the same. The body makes so many changes with the changes of place, time, condition, and atmosphere because this is the nature of the body. And it is also the act of the body. To take birth and to die only is the duty of our body. Its shape changes, but its nature and tendency both are the same. It joins itself with the materialistic world whereas the soul tries to be one with God. The soul talks to God the same way people talk with one another on mobile phones these days.
The King Parikshit at the time of the last moments of his life said, “Now I will die”. Shukdevji answered, “Why do you talk like animals (fools)? The word that catches our attention is “animal/fool” Such a great king and his Guru say that he is talking like animals. He said so because animals do not have the wisdom to differentiate between good and bad. O King! You are not a body. The way your body did not exist yesterday, today it is there, but tomorrow it will not be there. On the contrary, your soul was existing yesterday, it exists today, and it will exist tomorrow also. This is the old one and this is the eternal one. Therefore, that that grew up, and became eternal and that is mortal, this is you. You will not die, only your body will die. Lord Rama spoke these scholarly words to the wife of King Bali.
“Earth, water, fire, sky, and air, The body is made of these five elements, considered very low.”
Chhati Jal Pawak Gagan Sameera, Panch Rachit ati adham sarira:
Kabir
That “This body is made of five things: space, water, air, fire, and earth and ultimately it is absorbed by these things. You do not weep at all. Lead your life in devotion to God.” And the queen Tara was elated by these words and thought herself very lucky. The body changes its shape every moment. It wakes up, it sleeps, and it also dreams. But the soul remains constant in all these three conditions. The body expresses differently in all these three conditions. In the awakened position, it laughs or weeps at different situations, and gives expressions on dreams he sees, and shows different gestures. When it sleeps, it looks dead. Whereas the soul remains conscious in all three states. In the same way, as the pilgrim of four sides does not stop at one and goes to another side after visiting one side. He does not take them as his own, but only God is dear to him. Similarly, the soul also keeps changing bodies but keeps in touch with God, it has no attachment or love for the body. And this is for the reason that when it left the older body for the sake of a new [present] body, then it has to leave this body also at some later moment.
Why weep for a thing whose loss is imminent. It has to be left and why to be remorseful for that. It belongs to us, one should not think that way. As we make use of several things like solids and liquids etc.; but we cannot take them with us for the next birth; similarly, we cannot take our body with us to the next birth. We can use it only. We cannot take it with us. And God has given us this body for this reason only. Even then it is not ours. It is meant for use only. Use it and leave it. What we can carry with us? Only good and bad deeds. Whatever we have done in this life is going to decide our fate after death. Everything will be counted. On the result of our deeds, the next birth will be decided. Sweet or sour fruit. Then why should we desire a body only? It does not belong to us at all. We should desire what belongs to us. And only God is ours. He Himself has said,
“A fragment of My own self, in this world of living beings.”
“mamaivanso jivaloke”
[Gita 15/7]
“Man is my own part. My own divine figure. Only God is ours and we are for God. Rest is like actors of a play and who have to act according to the roles assigned to them. They live in the make-believe world and are imaginary. Like I say I am a King and you are my soldier. Now let us play together. All this is a play and not a reality. We play because we have to play. And we live life, that is why we have to take the help of body. We have to adopt it. Mind you, we are to adopt it and not own it. If you consider it to be your own, different materialistic problems start surrounding you. And thus the main objective – which is to do your human duties, to work for the uplift of mankind, to attain salvation, and to unite with God, the Supreme Power, which is the state of perfect contentment, all this is lost. All problems lie in our body only and not in our soul. The soul will do something wrong when it falls in love with the body, and the moment it happens it is separated from its father [God].
Where there will be no guide to lead her. And there will be no care-taker. Logically we can say that how can we call a thing our own when we don’t have any control over it. We cannot make changes in our body according to the way we desire. It is formed by nature and it works according to the laws of nature. We are a part of God and only God decides our ways. Therefore, there are two different powers that control our body and soul. One is materialistic and the other is spiritual. The body is materialistic and the soul is spiritual. How can a materialistic thing be useful for the spiritual power? Materialistic things are useful for materialistic things, conditions, and powers only. Thus any materialistic thing is of no use for spiritual things. That is why to show attachment to these things is absolutely wrong. As I have said earlier also that the body is meant for its use and utilization only. It means it is absolutely correct to use for materialistic life. But to do good deeds with the soul is supreme and above all.
Think over it, what is the value of the body without the soul? Does anybody love a dead body? Rather one gets scared to see it. Whereas souls are adored, venerated, and worshipped everywhere. The greatest evidence in our culture is the veneration of the father only. We make use of our body to do the worship. The same way as we use flowers, but who is worshipping? Our body or the flowers? Neither of the two. Only the soul is worshipping. Means we are worshipping. And we are not a body, but soul. The use of the body is done for the sake of materialistic relations. Whereas the use of the soul is done to walk on the path told by God. And only he will be taking that path who is prudent, and human. No devil will do that. God says, give up your right on the thing which does not belong to you.
God says that when He has made a man who is above all creatures and who is absolutely unique, and the man is given a great mind, then try to walk on the path which is told by God only. And show that way to others also. You are my son, and a part of my divine figure. You will be freed. Who is a mentor? How does he look? Who is the true mentor? So many questions of this nature the devotees put, which has a very simple meaning.
“The syllable ‘Gu’ represents darkness, and the syllable ‘Ru’ represents light. The Guru is indeed the supreme Brahman who dispels ignorance; there is no doubt about it.”
Gukarshchandharo hi rukarastej uchyate. Agyangrasakam Brahm Gururev na sanshayah.
Guru Gita
There are two words in “Guru” – “Gu” & “Ru”. “Gu” means darkness and “Ru” means “light”. That who leads you towards light from darkness. He is the real Guru. It has been said about the greatness of Guru: “
“When Guru and God both stand before me, whose feet should I touch first? I am forever indebted to my Guru, who showed me the path to God.”
Guru Gobind Dou khare, Kake lagoon paye Balihari guru aapki, jo Gobind diyo miliaye.”
Kabir
That both Guru and God are both standing in front of me. Whose feet should I touch first? I am grateful to my Guru who told me about God. The disciple also knows that by the grace of Guru only he could see his God. Therefore, he, even after seeing God was in a dilemma about whether to meet Guru First or God? He did not take long to decide that Guru is preferable who led him to the Darshan of God. He said I am grateful to my Guru, he did not mention the name of God but said grateful to Guru, who showed him the way to God. Man keeps learning something or the other in life every moment. But to see God, he has to take shelter from some Guru, who could show him the right way. Or you can say that Guru’s help has to be taken for viewing God’s divinity. Guru tries to link man to God and speaks in favor of man. He makes sure that everything goes in favor of his disciple. Shows him the path of truth. But the first step has to be taken by man. Man should respect his Guru from the core of his heart. Guru is the messenger of God, whosoever agrees with him, can join him. Join him on the path which leads to God’s abode. He does not hate or dishonor anybody. Everybody is a part of God and Guru is a form of God only.
“The individual soul is an eternal part of God.”
“Iswar ans jeev abnasi”
[Manas, Uttarkand, 117/1]
Guru is telling us about this thing only now much love God does to man who is a part of God only. You imagine, can we live without any part of our body properly? Absolutely not. Similarly, God loves His men immensely and for man is a part of His own entity. HE wants to see His men on the right path. HE wants to see His men safe and sound and beautiful. Guru only imparts the knowledge of life and God to his followers. Like an expert potter who makes a perfect pot after beating, cutting, and polishing it, Guru also forces his followers to go through such ordeals and ultimately make him a perfect man. Guru prays to God for the welfare of his followers. Because their goal is the welfare of mankind only. And Guru keeps trying for it. They have come to this earth for the sake of the welfare of mankind only.
Gurus [mentors] are dedicated messengers of Supreme Power, as different people work differently in different fields. [Not the Karmas – as Karma is a different thing]. Someone is a Doctor, the other is a lawyer, still other is a laborer and someone is a shop-keeper. Similarly, Guru also has been assigned a work. A duty. The duty of creating harmony in society – creating brotherhood in society. Showing him the way of deliverance. To bring happiness and harmony in the lives of people. He has only one thing in his mind and that is:
“May all be happy, may all be free from illness.”
“Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah Sarve santu niramaya”
That everybody should be happy and should be relieved from all sorrows. And for this only they give the message of God to mankind. To make this message reach everybody they do different things and use different means also. They play musical instruments and dance and sing, and tell people in different ways to come to the right path and view the Supreme entity. God who wishes every happiness and welfare for man. Sometimes, disciples put a question that, can’t they attain deliverance without the guidance of a Guru? The simple answer to it is that if you are standing in Faridabad and you want to go to Chandni Chowk in Delhi, how can you reach there if someone doesn’t tell you the right way? This is a very simple doctrine. You do not even know which side to go to reach Delhi, then what will you do? Then how can you reach Chandni Chowk? It is possible that you start going towards Bahadurgarh. Therefore, this is a useless question and useless doubt and this should be ignored now as the above example is enough to remove this doubt from your mind.
Guru [mentor] can change all the thorns into flowers which are coming your way. You have to display full faith and trust in him. It should not be done that you put all your misdeeds and evils in the bag of your Guru and even after taking an oath you do not get rid of your bad habits and sins. If you keep doing all the things as before, how can you get the bliss of your Guru that way? Once, when you take an oath in front of your Guru you should keep your words. This is the only effort you can make in order to attain salvation and reach God’s abode. Mind it, you can become a scholar by reading big books but your conscience is awakened by the Guru only. One can see the difference between good and bad, true and false by using his conscience only. It is conscience only that segregates man from other creatures living under the sun. Man does not live for his own existence only, but also lives for his family and for the society he lives in. That is why he has been conferred with the best mind [heart] and the most beautiful body amongst all the creatures. He has been given the best mind. Each and every word coming from the mouth of your mentor should be carefully listened to by the disciples, because this process is called a good company Satsang. The company of truth means it is also competent to get the bliss of God. The base of good company is very strong. That is why it has been stated in Ram Charit Manas also that without good company you cannot wake up your conscience.
“Without the company of the wise, discernment does not arise.”
“Binu satsang vivek na hoi”
[Manas, Bal Kand, 3/4]
But only listening to him will not do. Whatever you are told to do, you should execute it in your deeds. Then only you can understand the meaning of what you have been told. Does it have any power or not? Try to grasp everything your Guru tells you, and do your duties according to that only. You decide that whatever has been told to you will not be forgotten by you in any case. The relationship of Guru and Disciple is timeless. It has no beginning and it has no end. Who will show the path of deliverance to his follower if not Guru himself. Who will lead him to meet God? It has been said in Ram Charit Manas that Without the help of Guru nobody can cross over the river of this materialistic world.
“Without the Guru, no one can cross the ocean of existence.”
“Guru Bin Bhavnidhi Tarai na koi”
[Manas, Uttarkand 93/3]
Nobody can cross over the sea of this world without the help of a Guru. You have to know the way. You have to find a Guru. Only he can tell you what is good and what is bad. What you should and what should you leave. Only he will tell you what is good and what is bad. Otherwise, what is the difference between the lives of animals and human life? Eating-drinking, sleeping and dying all this is done by other creatures also. Then how human life is better than the lives of other creatures? What is the use of a human life, if you do all that, which is done by other creatures also. If this was the only thing to do in this world, then why we were given a human life. Think, how much love God does with His men that He has given the best body to men on this earth.
Guru removes the entire dark from inside your body and changes it into light because Guru has only one aim and that is the welfare of his followers. He is the protector of religion. He works for the spread and extension and communication of religion. And he does his duty continuously to the full. Guru is able to give you everything you want from him. You work according to his desire and you will see that it is true. You will find that you have been given everything you aspired for. Not that you do not do anything but you blame for it to Guru. You will be given the entire raw material but to cook and eat is your task only. How many spices are to be used, and how much to be cooked will also be told to you. But even then if you do not do it according to how you are told, if you use spices in excess and if you cook less or more than required, then Guru is not to blame for that. He is your Guru his duty is to tell you. To work on it is the duty of man. Listen to good things keeping your Guru in your mind. All your doubts and worries will surely perish.
Guru does not want anything from you. Whatever you desire, Guru also desires the same. He is the main stair between God and devotee. He is a mediator. Gurus live for the welfare of the devotees. He is not bound to run after others to make them his devotees. But they will definitely keep singing in the praise of God. You are to put all your efforts. But after accepting the Guru, He keeps remembering the good and bad of his followers. They put an end to all your adversities and do everything for the welfare of the followers. Once Guru accepts you once as a disciple, He does not let any evil affect his follower, as a mother takes care of food and rest of her child and put all her efforts into the welfare of her child. When Arjun was sitting with a confused mind and having an infatuated mind over the subject related to duty [dharma] in war-ground senselessly he accepts Lord Krishna as his Guru.
“I am your disciple, instruct me who has taken refuge in you.”
“sisyaste’ham sadhi maam tvaam prapannam”
[Gita, 2/7]
Lord Krishna became Sarathi of Arjun in front of great warriors, and a very big force. And HE did it willingly. Became his driver. He did not hesitate at all and said: O Arjun, you give up all the devices and take my shelter.”
Guru is a guide. Desires are yours
“Sarvadharmanparityajya mamekam saranam vraja”
“Abandon all varieties of religion and just surrender unto Me alone.”
[Gita 18/66]
Why did he become the driver? Because Arjun took shelter in God’s abode. He accepted Lord Krishna as his Guru? Guru is the sole and unique source of spread of conscience and deliverance. Therefore, it is not at all fair to remain doubtful regarding His power. Scriptures have written a lot about the greatness of Guru most authentically. We get to read so much on the greatness of Guru at all times. In Kaliyug everybody needs a real, knowledgeable Guru inevitably. Because in Kaliyug, Adharma [evils] will be prevailing all over. It is said in Padm Purana
“Kalinadharmamaitren”
“In the age of Kali (Kali Yuga), friendship is the way of dharma.”
[Uttar 193/31].
Kaliyug is a friend of evils. In Kaliyug bad elements will be ruling over good elements and a common will not be able to fight these evils and therefore cannot attain salvation. For this knowledge of salvation only, one has to seek the shelter of Guru. After going into Guru’s protection, take an oath not to repeat the mistakes which you have done in the past and you will not walk on the wrong and bad ways. Because this is absolutely true and accepted that wrongdoings of the disciples also result in the downfall of his Guru also, just because he is the well-wisher of his followers.
“The sins of the disciple are dear to the Guru.”
“Shishyapapam gurum priye”
[Kularanvatantra]
Even the sins which are committed by the followers are accepted by the Guru as the Guru is always a well-wisher of his disciples. So this is the benevolence of Guru. His kindness is peculiar and his company also is peculiar. He does not wait for anybody to be his follower to bestow his kindness on him. Rather they take birth only to do good deeds on earth and to work for the benefit of the whole mankind. This human dress, which God has given to us is how important, we can know about it from our mentors only. God in the form of a mentor plays the role of a mediator for making God and man one. He is the main pillar for their meeting. Guru is giving his valuables free of cost and it depends on man how much he can get from this loot. It depends on his power of grasping and his moral powers. Guru’s treasures are never finished, and he keeps on giving them to others. They take it as their moral duty. To make everybody’s life happy and convenient from their sacred pots and for spreading sacred knowledge. They save you from the path which is full of thorns and they teach you like a teacher.
Such a charismatic personality has been given by God to Gurus. They have the power to make them like themselves. They have the power of making them gurus and saints. It is said that
“There is a great difference between the philosopher’s stone and a saint.”
“Paras mein aru sant mein bahut antro jan.”
Try to understand the difference between Paras and the Guru. Paras can change the iron into Gold, but cannot make it Paras itself. But the Guru has got this power. He can elevate their standards to their own standards. He can make the lives of the meanest people, and mean and ornery evildoers to as good as that of their own. They uplift the mean people in this way. Sometimes better than their own level. As it is said before also, that it depends upon the disciple how much he can get from the benevolence of Guru and to what level. How much he can achieve from the grace of Guru. But keep in mind that:
“Go to meet the saints, abandoning illusion and pride.”
“Sant Milan ko jayie Taj maya Abhimaan.”
To meet a Saint you should give up all pride and illusion. Man should go to a saint after having given up the feeling of rich and poor, high and low, big and small. All these feelings are to be put aside before going to a Saint. Keep your mind free from all these thoughts. Your surrender to Guru is the key to get his bliss.
“Jyon Jyon Dag aage badhe Sab koti yagya samaan.”
“As each step forward is taken, it is equivalent to performing millions of sacrifices (yagyas).”
One step forward in the shelter of Guru is equivalent to the result of a crore of yajnas. Such a great effect of the Guru is stated. As to eat food, we first cook it, and then eating is very necessary, the same way to be blessed with the grace of our guru is also very necessary. It should not happen that he is pouring his blessings on you and you are keeping the pot of your mind inverted. Thus you can get nothing into it. It will remain empty. The whole water [kindness] will be scattered here and there. You went in front of Guru, accepted him as Guru, but did not get anything from him. You did not obey him. Turned a deaf ear to the lessons taught by the Guru. When you are not executing his lessons in your life then what is the use of accepting him as a Guru.?
And on that, you blame your Guru for having given nothing to you. Guru has given a lot to you and still giving, and wants to give in the future also but it also depends on the disciple also. He has to be a deserving follower. He will give you food, but should have hunger to eat. Food can be given to anybody, but you cannot give hunger to all. First, you need hunger, then only food is required. You will get food only when you are hungry. First hunger is required, and then the supplier of food. You will get food then only. But starting should be done from your end only. If you are not curious enough, how can Guru help you? You show your interest first, only then he will give his blessings to you.
God has filled this earth with countless pearls [luminaries] whose presence is making the world enlightened. And this enlightened world is giving us a great welcome. God is also our well-wisher. And he has given us a beautiful body. The adopter of this body will either go to hell after his death or will go to heaven or it will attain salvation. These are the three states. There is no fourth way. Any creature can go to hell or heaven according to his deeds. But man’s goal is to attain salvation. To lift himself above both the states. Where there is no further birth, no further death. Only the attainment of divine abode. When God has shown you the way, has given you the key in the shape of a Guru, then why to delay in reaching there. Why don’t you enter the divine abode? Why so much delay in salvation?
Shvetashvetar Upnishad says:
“To those great souls who have the same supreme devotion to the Guru as they have to God, the meanings of the scriptures become clear.”
“Yasya dev para bhaktiyatha deve tatha guro Tasyate kathita hiryarthah prakashante mahatmanah”
about Guru that as the devotee is devoted to Supreme God the same way it is in Guru also. You can see all those spiritual powers in him also. When a disciple works according to the lessons of his Guru and executes them in his deeds, both Guru and disciple become one. When the disciple adopts the ways of his Guru and fills up his heart with the blessings of his Guru, then each and every part of his body gets empowered. His entire body starts feeling the presence of supreme God and he gets spiritual feelings in it. A true follower, while leading his life does act according to the teachings of his guru, but also leads his life according to the morals of his Guru. He has come into the shelter of his Guru for the sake of attaining union with the Supreme God. And he is doing it on the order of God only, he should think this way. He should have relations with the outer figure of his guru but he should also make a spiritual relationship with his guru. The follower should not waste his time in useless matters and should not say anything wrong about his guru in any condition. Because speaking ill of your guru is worse than any other disgrace. The man who is indulged in such acts goes to the meanest world.
It can be taken like this also that a man who is your well-wisher and keeps doing all the worthwhile deeds for you, and you are hating him for different reasons, it is very shameful and absolutely undesirable. The form of guru is like manifested Supreme God. He is like Narayana. One should venerate his guru in this way. He should be worshipped like we worship god. There should be no doubt in this. Each and every word coming out of his mouth is like a sacred word and to follow his words and act according to his words is the utmost duty of the disciple. Such a follower, after executing worthwhile deeds ultimately is led into the world of Divine supreme. Nobody can bind the grace and deeds of his guru in limits by whatever means and devices. To find out the limits of the sea of bliss of guru is not only impossible but also it comes in the category of sins.
Guru was pouring his blessings on everybody but it also depends on the taker and with how much faith in that. How he is showing his faith in his Guru and how he is working according to the teachings of his guru. There is a difference between a disciple and a student. A student gets an education and later gets involved in the fields of his own interest. Whereas a disciple is always ready to serve his guru and always ready to seek his help to find ways. Always ready to be guided by him. A student cannot become a Guru whereas a disciple can become a guru for he takes bath in a spiritual pond and he drinks the sacred water touched by the feet of his guru. He learns all the arts of life from his Guru. Not merely the bookish knowledge. Each and every word of guru’s knowledge directs him.
Kabir requested Ramanandji to accept him as his disciple, but Ramanandji refused to do so testing his sincerity. On this Kabirji lied down on the stair on which Ramanandji used to come after having taken a bath. In the morning, after having taken a bath, when Ramanandji started walking towards the Ashram, then all of a sudden he put his foot on Kabirji, and he naturally said Ram-Ram. And this Ram-Ram was accepted by Kabirji and felt himself spiritually taught and took Ram-Ram as his lesson given by his Guru. So much great is the value of the words of a Guru. What a Guru said when he said, and where he said, all these states have a significance of their own. The greatest guide on the spiritual path is the Guru only. Whenever the disciples feel disheartened, deviates from the right path, then guru comes to his help and shows him the right way. He is enlightened with the light of his guru’s powers as guru fills his mind with a limitless power, for he is having a divine relationship with his guru. Guru is an endless source of nectar and by coming in contact with which, the soul of the follower also becomes able to view that endless power.
The abode of guru is the main goal of the disciple. If a disciple thinks in these terms, then rest assured that he has succeeded in becoming a true disciple. Whatever particles came under the feet of his guru, it became invaluable. The dust of Guru’s abode is so powerful as to convert metal into gold. How significant it is to walk on that path is, this can be known and told by a disciple only. It’s a matter of a personal experience. To take baths in the sacred water, if the disciple gets that nectar, which is required by everybody. And which is desired by everybody. The dust of the feet of the Guru spreads spiritual feelings in the minds of disciples and the conflux of Ganga-Jamuna-Saraswati, the three sacred rivers flowing jointly, and where they meet together, you start feeling of the supreme power. There is nothing artificial in their relationship, nothing material. There is no possibility of any duplicity because there is no place for falsehood between the two. Guru is truth, and the path. And his follower is the walker of the road.
The search for truth by man is completed only when he achieves the bliss of a Guru and becomes a true disciple. The disciple works according to the teachings of his Guru and takes those words as words of God and executes them in his life. Because only guru is the guide, he guides and tells which way to go and what to do. He tells his follower to do the worthwhile deeds and leads him on the right path. It is the duty of a disciple to remain dedicated to his guru and whatever he is told to do, he should do. There is a sacred relationship of love between the two. Adoration is the main bonding, and whatever guru does for his follower and what follower does for his guru both the acts are executed by the force of love for each other. The follower should be ready at all times to do what he is told by his Guru. And should be anxious to complete it successfully. But when doing it he should not feel compelled to do it or that he is working under somebody.
There is a story in this context. Aaruni, the disciple who became a big saint named Uddalak. There were many disciples in the Ashram of Rishi Dhomya. One of them was Aaruni. He was a very dedicated disciple and used to respect his guru most faithfully. Once there was a rainy season. Rishi Dhomya suddenly started worrying that in such a heavy downfall, the wall of the field might be swept away by the force of water. If it happens the entire crop will be destroyed. Rishi Dhomya called his disciple Aaruni, who fell asleep at the feet of his guru. He ordered his follower to go to the field and see whether it is safe from the rainy water, otherwise the whole crop could be destroyed. If the walls are broken, rectify them and do some repair work to safeguard the crop. Aaruni immediately went to the field. He repaired some walls but could not stop the water from entering from one wall. Due to a wide gap, it was impossible for him to stop the water. Ultimately he lied down there filling the gap and stopped the water from entering into the field. He put great efforts to stop the water, but he did not succeed. Much time had elapsed. Aaruni did not turn up. It started raining cats and dogs. Dhomya decided to go there and see the situation. After so much of an effort, he saw Aaruni lying stopping the water from the wide gap. In the severe cold, his body became like a rod. But the dedicated disciple did everything to stop the water from entering the field. He was ready to sacrifice his life for that.
On seeing this, Rishi Dhomya’s heart was filled with love for his disciple and his eyes started shedding tears. And he immediately embraced Aaruni. He felt proud to have a disciple like Aaruni, and he made him Mahrishi immediately. And called him Mehrishi Uddalak. This is the fruit of devotion. He who was a disciple, became a guru himself. See how a guru gives away his blessings that he made the life of his disciple a great success. The disciple should dedicate himself to his guru with full faith. Guru is like the divine spirit. He is God. The disciple who has full faith in his guru and is dedicated to him sincerely, becomes all-knower. A disciple whose guru is happy with him, is loved by God also. God too, wants to see his devotees happy and calm. Therefore, the form of guru has been made. The supreme power knows that darkness can be cast away by light only. The darks cannot stand before light and it tries to run away from light. Guru is the source of such a great light. Guru alone destroys all the ill-wills in man, and after perishing all the wrong feelings in his disciple, makes him a man of character, which makes a good society and makes a strong society. To make a society religious and full of faith is the main object of gurus. And by doing this, they are fulfilling the desire of God only. Only he is the true disciple who, takes his guru as his ideal and creates a beautiful society by performing worthwhile deeds. Who leads his life, for the good of his society, his family, and for him also and by doing such duties assimilates in the divine form.
Kabir has written about the Guru that if you take the entire earth as a paper, and all the forests as a writing instrument, and seven seas as ink, even then you cannot describe the greatness of a Guru. The grace of guru is limitless. Guru’s knowledge knows no boundaries and it is invaluable. Shri Sampradaya or Ramanuj Sampradaya’s Guru Ramanujacharya established for the welfare of the society 14 Peethas and 8 Seats hoisting the flag of religion. He himself was the complete incarnation of Sheshji. In Bhagvad Gita, Lord Krishna has said that
“Take refuge in Me alone.”
“Mamekam saranam vraja”
[Gita, 18/66]
this world is mortal. Continuously corroding. And full of sorrows. Therefore, you come to my shelter. Sing in praise of Me and take shelter in me. This will ensure your complete happiness. Arjun was very lucky that Lord Krishna disclosed this secret knowledge and limitless knowledge before him. But it should be disclosed to each and everyone, for this reason all gurus do their efforts to make it available to everybody. You can get the bliss of guru only by accepting him as your own or by dedicating yourself to him. There is no other way except this. You offer everything to the guru, this is the easiest way. You should walk on the path shown by your guru only. The description of the guru’s greatness has been so many times told in the scriptures and in the epics of the olden times. Even then nobody is so powerful that he could completely write or tell all His virtues. His greatness is limitless. What to speak of common people, even the lords could not do this. It is said in praise of guru that:
“Without devotion to the Guru, austerities, knowledge, vows, and noble lineage are all in vain, like decorations on a dead body.”
Gurubhakti vihinasya tapo vidhya vratam kulam Vyartha sarv shavasyaiv nanalankar-bhushanam”
As all the ornaments and decorations are useless for a dead person, similarly without devotion, prayers, fasts and knowledge all is useless. And also it is said that:
“If Shiva is angry, the Guru can save you; but if the Guru is angry, no one can save you.”
Shive rooshte shivastrata, guro rooshte na kashchan”
Even if God is angry with you, you can take the help of a guru to make Him happy with you, but if the guru becomes angry, then nobody can help you. Nobody.
This is said only to tell the greatness of the guru. As life is not possible without oxygen, similarly salvation is not possible without guru. He wakes up the sleeping powers in you. Guru is all-knower. To completely describe his greatness is absolutely impossible. Describing his greatness brings harmony in your life, it brings complete happiness, it is blissful, and it is energetic. The company of guru gives you a feeling of deliverance and liberation from all worries and sorrows and ultimately you attain complete freedom.
To see God in different manifest forms and to fulfilling his religious desires and for mental peace, an able guru is always needed. Because guru is the only person who can wake your powers hidden but slept inside you and he only can work as a lighthouse to show you the way. Only he can make us free from our worries and put an end to all our sorrows. They can calm down all the doubts coming up before time and again creating problems for us. By giving their knowledge to us, they make us learned. Actually, he is a great store of knowledge. They draw all our evils towards them to make us free from them. Guru is such a God in the shape of a man, who is visible by all his followers and makes us free from all materialistic worries and trivial pleasures. And they fill our minds with endless harmony. Such gurus have a great store of virtues meant for the welfare of mankind and their devotees. They fill the mind of man with all virtues and remove all the doubts from their minds. Gurus are also a great store of great power who can make the way of meeting man with God, very easy and accessible.
Gurus are powerful enough to make absolute and complete changes in man even by looking at him. Such powerful and well-wisher gurus though living a spiritual life keep working as men and are called the teachers also. With the help of such expert gurus a disciple can pass through all the troubles which come his way very easily and successfully. They remain unattached and, stoic in all the difficult circumstances and don’t lose their calm because they are having a helping hand of God on them and they feel absolutely free from any scare.
Gurus should never be tested. Once accepting them as Guru, the utmost respect should be given to his refuge and each and every word said by them should be respected and venerated as the words of Vedas. One should try to get the maxim blessings from his guru and should not try to know about the powers and capabilities of his guru nor should he try to know wherefrom all these powers his guru gets. All these activities are not necessary. They are able to teach even the learned people, but are so kind and generous to take lessons from the fools also. Their greatness is limitless. Though they do not possess anything. Even then he is King of Kings. There is a possibility of taking them for impecunious so they cannot give us anything. But this is wrong. Or if they look like a king, whether or not they will give us something. This is all a freak of their nature. They give you everything. They are the store-keepers of the treasure of God. And they are distributing it amongst all. To give less or more is not their outlook. It depends on the taker, how he sees it. If he feels he is given less, he is given less. If he feels that he is given everything, then he is given everything. They do not want anything for their own use. Even then they store it. For it is needed by others also. They give it to others with an open heart and with great generosity. Everything is easily accessible for such a great person because they possess spiritual powers. Though they do not use these powers for their own prosperity and do not look glowing with the possession of all these powers.
All the prosperities sit together at their place and work according to the orders of these seers. They take this as their sacred duties. Having got such God-like sons, even the earth feels proud to be called their mother. The blessings of the seers never go awry. The sun and the Moon may forget their duties, the hands of a clock may stop working, but they never forget to confer their blessings on the followers. This is not within the powers of the people who are mentally inert to know such a God-like guru, and sometimes they become very secretful and absolutely divine. They first withdraw all the darkness of ignorance from the minds of their followers and thereafter fill it with knowledge. After removing the attachment of the body from the mind of their disciple, to unite his soul with Supreme God is also taken as a worthwhile deed by them. And they do it as if they are doing their duty.
The disciple who drinks the water that is touched by the feet of his guru, and so made sacred, he succeeds in his life and his soul is ultimately united with Supreme God. They remain manifest in the soul of their followers and also authorize their lives also. He is a God in the manifest form. They are competent to reward their disciples with the fruits they deserve most and are lord of lords, the most sacred place, omnipresent, and live in the hearts of their disciples. The veneration guru is also very much important. Its importance has been told for centuries. The utmost respect has been given to the veneration of guru. Such veneration is capable of producing the desired results and bond of spiritual love is created between guru and his disciple. Their bond remains constant for lives beyond. And they do not estrange this relationship.
As the name of your parents does not change even if they change their dresses, their place of living, and even if the language is changed, the pronunciation remains the same, similarly the relationship of guru and disciple is timeless and endless. The bliss of such a guru is limitless and makes us free from all the materialistic worries. To sing in the praise of such a Guru, to serve such a guru and to remember him by heart again and again results in complete harmony. The disciples keep getting enlightened daily by the bliss of guru. One should learn from such experiences having had by other disciples. For these experiences further make your trust and faith stronger than before. And those having no faith in such things start showing their faith in gurus. And they become faithful.
The service of gurus is like a stair to reach the refuge of God. We should accept it. The words of guru are the words of god, such beliefs render stability to the soul. All the doubts in the mind are washed away and purify the body. Service of gurus also brings peace of mind, stability in society, and integrity in the country. The guru is very much needed in human life. There should be at least one, who could show you the way. And this can be done only by those who are capable of doing it. People say that such an able guru is very difficult to meet. To such people my humble suggestion is that the world is never short of possibilities. There is a long tradition of gurus in the world right from Guru Shankaracharya to Ramanujacharya. Very long and limitless line. There is no shortage of gurus, only we should have the eye to see them. The eye of faith and trust.
Gurus do not take birth and they do not die even. They simply change their dresses. You call them from the core of your heart and see. How the power of Gurus work like stars moving and scattered in the sky. He is like an incarnated in this world of different creatures. Their nature is to take away all the worries and difficulties of their followers. But when will he make you free from difficulties. When the disciple will call him with full faith. It is said that you should never go in front of your guru empty-handed.
“One should not go empty-handed.”
“Rikt haste na gantavyam”
Not that something should always be taken by you to him. But only if you present the flowers of your faith in his feet, that will do. That is enough to make him happy. Even if you learn by heart countless scriptures and volumes. All is useless unless there is a potent guru. There should be no scattering in the society and no discriminations. Guru is a very competent medium for this kind of work. He is the greatest medium to show you the path of the supreme soul. In his each calling, there is a secret welfare of mankind. He creates good for the well-being of society. Each act of his is for the sake of mankind, for the protection of the good society, for the welfare of each and every creature. His work is to lead man towards the union of his soul with the Supreme God by way of Religious songs, meditation, penance, sacrament, yagna, etc. And with the help of these activities, he performs his duties.
Ours is the only country in the entire world where so much has been written about the greatness and importance of gurus in scriptures and Shastras. There must be some reason behind it that so much is said of gurus in books. And the relationship of Guru-Shishya [follower] is so strong that it is still in the tradition of our country and is present here for centuries. The great emphasis has been laid on this tradition in Indian culture. Because small or big, man or woman, young or old, everybody needs a guru. For gurus work for God and man alike, and with their help show man the path of humanity which ultimately helps him meet God. And by doing this, gurus themselves become Gods and what gods cannot do, is done by them. By showing their manifest form.
He is a divine personality away from all bonds, obligations, etc. The view of supreme power becomes easy to see by the veneration of gurus. For seeking the bliss of God, Saint Guru Nanak Dev Ji has said a beautiful thing. That reach him by devotion! Leave yourself on his mercy. Give up every pomp and show, pride, and boastfulness. Be actively ready to die walking on his path. You will definitely get his glimpse.
